Before and After Your PRP Injections

Please carefully read and follow these instructions for both before and after your PRP treatment.

Remember that PRP causes inflammation, which is absolutely necessary for optimal results.

These directions include what products to avoid in order to maintain inflammation as long as possible.

BEFORE THE PROCEDURE

For at least 7, preferably 10-14, days BEFORE the treatment:

  1. DO NOT use steroid creams or gels on the scalp.

  2. Do NOT take oral prescription steroids. If you take steroids, please discuss with your PCP before purchasing the PRP package because you will also be advised to stop these medications for 2 weeks after the procedure. Steroids are strong anti-inflammatories and will adversely affect your results.

  3. Do NOT take Advil, Aleve, aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn (all NSAIDs), Vitamin A, Vitamin E, gingko biloba, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, Essential Fatty Acids (EPA, DHA), for at least two weeks before your treatment. Our goal is to create inflammation. These listed medications will limit or prevent inflammation, which can diminish your results.

  4. If you must take aspirin for cardiac reasons, you certainly may do so. This may limit your results, although it is less likely.

  AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Shampoo, rinsing, massage, etc:

  1. Do NOT do anything to your scalp for at least 3 hours after your treatment.

  2. You may gently rinse your scalp and hair in warm water after 3 hours. No scrubbing.

  3. In 12 hours, you may shampoo your hair and scalp normally, although be more gentle with scrubbing, rubbing and massaging.

  4. For the first 3 days, use shampoo that is pH balanced. We recommend using Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash or tea tree shampoo (any brand).

Hair/scalp Products:

  1. Do not use any hair products for at least 6 hours after your treatment.

  2. Avoid resuming Minoxidil (Formula 82M, Rogaine®) or hair coloring or straightening for three days.

Activity:

  1. Take it easy the first two to three days for optimal results.

  2. Avoid vigorous exercise, sun, and heat exposure for at least two days after your treatment.

  3. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, swimming for two days after your treatment.

  4. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes for three days after treatment.

  5. Smoking damages blood vessels and causes significant problems with healing, so healing takes longer and is often incomplete. These changes decrease the number of follicles that grow, plus less hair grows from the follicles. The hair that grows may be weak and damaged, and results tend to last for a shorter time. We recommend quitting smoking at least three months before you start any procedures because it takes that long for the vessels to recover enough to make a difference, although it still may not make a significant difference.

For TWO WEEKS after the procedure, it is imperative you do NOT decrease the inflammation.

These listed products will decrease or prevent inflammation, which can adversely affect your

results. ALWAYS discuss stopping medications with your primary care physician prior to

purchasing a PRP  package.

  1. Steroid creams or gels on the scalp.

  2. Oral prescription steroids. Steroids are strong anti-inflammatories and will adversely affect your results

  3. Advil, Aleve, aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn (all NSAIDs), Vitamin A, Vitamin E, gingko biloba, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, Essential Fatty Acids (EPA, DHA).

  4. If you must take aspirin for cardiac reasons, you certainly may do so. This may limit your results, although it is less likely.

  5. Try to avoid using ice on the scalp because it will decrease inflammation.

Potential Side Effects:

  1. It is normal to experience bruising, redness, itching, bumps, swelling and/or soreness that may last from two to five days following your procedure.

  2. It is not common, but you may experience swelling in your forehead and/or eyelids after the procedure. If this happens, sleep with your head elevated, take antihistamines like Claritin etc. everyday you notice swelling.

  3. Continue increased water intake the first week after your treatment.
